How to Enjoy Poetry?

poetry books in a shelf

Reading poetry might be not what it looks like. Fiction or non-fiction can be based on personal preferences, however not every poem gives what is expected. The main reason for that is poetry is considered as another sub-genre of literature. That’s true; but one not should forget that like fiction or non-fiction poetry is also diveded in sub-genres.

For some people enjoying poetry is easy, natural like a birth-given treasure. Some other people it has no meaning and bunch of words written without thinking too much about it. As a natural poem enjoyer, I can understand the opposite group. Every time your English teacher asks, "What is the maning of the blue curtain , here?" You’re the person who burst out and says, "The poet just like it that way, I guess?" I eas always amused with this answers.

All jokes aside, here’s a starting point; know what you love. It’s important to decide which type of poem you enjoy. Same habbit as reading a book, you realize you enjoy fantastic books and keep reading them. Free verse? Sonets? Odes? Narrative poetry? If it’s hard to distinguish genres, you can read some poems of the certains poets and dive into that poet’s genre.

After deciding what you love, it’s important to understand what you read. In poetry, blue curtains always have meaningbecause a good poet don’t use unnecessary words in poems. Well, it’s obviously not possible to know what poet actually at some points. However, by reading their life stories and the certain era’s charachteristics, you can actually determine the underlying meaning.

If you enjoy living a mark of yourself into the books, you can underline, anotate, write notes to make it entertaining. Living the trace of youself into the poetry s actually the most self-romantic act of life. So, just read and find what you feel into the ballads of human soul.
